Grilled Peaches with Sweet Cream

Grilled Peaches with Sweet CreamPeaches are in stores now and I wish our young peach tree was sharing fruit with us already. There are smallish sized fruit on it right now, but my guess is that it’s not really going to be fruitful (no pun intended) until next year since we just added it earlier this year. Irregardless of the peach tree status I came across a simple and quick idea for grilling peaches and serving it with a sweet cream on the side by “Great Food Fast” (The Kitchens of Martha Stewart Living). The original recipe called for amaretti cookie crumbles on top of the sweet cream.

This quick fruit snack or dessert will be as sweet as your peaches might be.   The peaches I brought home from the market weren’t as sweet as usual, but I still enjoyed this dish and the dollop of sweet cream.

Grilled Peaches with Sweet Cream
source adapted from Everyday Food: Great Food Fast

Serves 2

Ingredients

2 peaches cut in half, stone removed
1/2 cup low-fat sour cream
1 tablespoon light brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
butter

Directions

Mix together the sour cream, brown sugar and optional cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside.

On a grill or grill/panini pan, lightly butter grates/pan.  Lightly butter both sides of the peaches and place on grill for 5-6 minutes, turning once or twice on both sides. Cover the grill or pan while the peaches are cooking.

Remove from pan and add a dollop of the sweet cream.

I’ve seen chefs on the Food Network grill stone fruits, but I’ve never tried it myself. These look wonderful with the spiced sweet cream!

@Linn – Swedish home cooking, @Ruby, @denise – quickies on the dinner table, @Juliana, @claudia lamascolo: Thank you! =o)

@Kate – I like what you have for breakfast!

@ Laura T. Plums sound like a great idea. Agree on the peach fuzz thing, although I don’t mind a little on the fruit (it’s okay on apricots too). =)

@sweetlife: – Can’t feel guilty when loved ones are eating fruit (versus other non-fruity items!) :)

@Tomato Snob: Mmm. I’d like to try it with ricotta/mascarpone too. Thanks for the ideas on adding the vanilla and/or zest. How can anything be bad that has fresh fruit and vanilla?!

I just love grilling peaches – one of my all time summer favorites. I like using ricotta or mascarpone flavored with vanilla and lemon zest! Who ever said the grill was just for meat and veggies any ways.
chow for now ;)

What a lovely idea! I do something similar but with plums (I can’t stand the fuzzy skin on peaches). I’ve only tried it with whipped cream, but I love th idea of of a sour cream-based topping. I’ll definitely put this on my grocery shopping list.

It’s the simplest dishes that are the best! I love this, and you know how we love to grill at our house :) I’ll be making this for sure. Love the sweetened sour cream – nice and tangy! I think it would be wonderful with a thick and creamy yogurt, too!

Sounds easy and yummy! I love desserts based on fruits. as hubby loves pears much, I must try this. Maybe I will substitute cream with ice cream as it’s hetting hotter here. I love the idea of adding cinnamon in the cream though. Why not do the same on the ice cream? Thanks for this recipe!

@bunkycooks & @The Cilantropist: Thank you and for the well wishes for our peach tree. Since he/she is still so new, I will be grateful that it makes it through the year healthy and that it survives the summer, winter and the gophers! =)

@The Rowdy Chowgirl: Such a great idea…I need to try it with creme fraiche too (I’ve never used it before!)

@citronetvanille: Thanks Silvia – I’m thinking why not just make fruit desserts these days since they are abundant right now and nature’s own dessert gifts! :)

The Cilantropist June 6, 2010 at 10:16 pm

This looks so delicious and I have been just waiting for ripe peaches! Heres hoping your tree has fruit this year. ;)

The Rowdy Chowgirl June 6, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Yum! It never would have occurred to me to sweeten sour cream, but it sounds divine. Although I might cheat and use creme fraiche….

Grilled peaches – now that rings in summer!!! I love greek yogurt and have the honey one from Trader Joe’s every morning – bet that would be divine on the peaches. Thanks for sharing!

So perfectly pretty! This would work nicely with Greek yogurt, too, instead of sour cream, I bet. I’m very jealous you have a peach tree, regardless of whether that’s where these particular peaches came from. :)
