Professional Photographer Magazine - December 2009 Issue

Did you catch the December 2009 issue of the Professional Photographer magazine?  There's a beautiful feature article on photographer James Baigrie.  The 8-page spread includes some inspiring and gorgeous  food photography and discusses his approach and experiences that had led him to a very successful career as a photographer.

It's a good read so if you don't receive the magazine, beg, borrow, plead for someone to lend you a copy!

Came across this unique Web site called Food Pairing.   The goals of the Food Pairing site are to:

"...inspire on new food combinations (What fits well with...) and to support you on how to replace food products by a combination of other products..."

It certainly looks like an interesting and useful tool and I can see it's value now, but it will be even better when they have built their database up further to include more combinations.   The interface is a little clunky and not as intuitive as it could be.   

I look forward to using it!

A couple of years ago when I started the Teenie Cakes blog (originally on Blogger), my intention was to blog about cupcakes and baking.   Ironically, I haven't posted one recipe on cupcakes.   There are a lot of inspiring cupcake blogs (my all-time fav Cupcake Bakeshop by Chockylit) out on the internet and I was inspired and excited about cupcakes.   The thing is, I can't possibly eat all those cupcakes I want to make.  Unless I'm baking for my nephews if and when they visit, what to do with all those cupcakes?  Inevitably, hubby and I will eat most of them ... and eat them we would!   If I made the standard recipe size of a couple dozen cupcakes as often as I wanted to, we'd both be bigger than a house! 

Then I joined The Daring Bakers and not only was it fun, it's just what I needed to challenge my baking skills, take me to the next level and open me up to baking projects that I would probably never have embarked on, on my own.  I really enjoy the "Daring" community and I get to kill three birds (odd expression) with one stone:

• My love for baking
• My love and enjoyment for food photography (major challenge)
• My enjoyment of blogging

Other things I enjoy along the lines of food is cooking and wine.  With cooking, it's quite a challenge to photograph the food/meal you've just prepared, because unlike baking -- it almost always has to be served more immediately than your baking creations.   I feel that food posts should include images most of the time because, after all, we do tend to eat with our eyes and I toil with "will my posts be interesting without pictures?" The Teenie Cakes blog was suppose to be a journal of my thoughts and experiences related to baking and cooking.  I lost focus of that.

BTW - if you haven't seen "Julie and Julia" (Meryl Streep and Amy Adams) and you enjoy cooking/baking/movies and blogging ...it's a must see.  Definitely one for my DVD library!

Over many, many years, I've organized and saved all my Bon Appetite magazines.   They're just beautiful magazines with so much information, recipes and amazing food photography.   I haven't subscribed in a couple of years, as the format of the magazine has changed and has not appealed to me to renew my subscription.

As you can imagine, with all those years of magazines, they are taking up valuable space and as time goes by I've forgotten about some of the great articles and recipes that are buried within those old pages.    I've started going through each one of them, one-by-one, pulling out things that I want and then will either recycle or donate the magazines. But then, what do I do with those clippings?   I have a huge stack of them.   How to organize it?  Do I really want to retype everything?  

I'm a web developer/designer by day, and have started the creative process of writing my own personal recipe application with the idea to convert my scanned recipes to OCR (optical character recognition).

Personalized Kitchen Clocks

I was going through some old Bon Appetite magazines these last weeks and came across these beautiful, personalized clocks from John Borin Fine Hand Made Clocks.   These personalized timepieces come in four dial diameter sizes, are a bit pricey but what a beautiful, unique item to display in your home or purchase for that someone that seems to have everything. 

I especially like the kitchen themes of America, Italian and French and some Kitchen Rules and Sayings that they suggest.    Hmmm.  I just may have to save my lunch money to add one of these beauties to mi cucina!
